What is Collards & Culture?

What an interesting name for a blog right! Yeah, I know that how else was I suppose to get your attention. Everyone loves food and culture. No, seriously Collards and Culture is the name because I am black woman that has been dealt a hand that is difficult to navigate, but not impossible. So let me explain what it all means. Collards are a food that could be the entree or the side dish. These are the parts of your life that have an impact, but you get the choice of the level of that impact. Does it become the entree and take over every part of your life? Is it the side dish, it enhances who you are with little to no impact on you. This is how we have to look at the events that happen to us. Are they happening to us or for us. You decide for yourself. What are your collard moments?

Culture. We all love all the parts of culture. Culture is the exciting, fun things that happen and make an event unique. As true as that may be there are parts of the black culture that are not serving us. What are those parts you ask? They are the parts that lead me to writing this blog: mental health, physical health, financial health, family support and health care. Yeah the unspoken things about our culture. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer I started searching the internet for women of color talking about their experience. I found NOTHING. Lots of women that were speaking about their journey but not women of color. I was disappointed. It is not that other women wouldn't have advice that I needed ( they did) , I just wanted to hear it from someone I felt I related to more. I took the advice of others while still wondering why no one of color was talking about it. Maybe we aren't getting breast cancer at high rates like other races I thought. Then I went for my first chemo treatment and walked into a room with 4 other women that looked like me. That was the day that I knew I would not be another black woman not telling my story. So, here I am to shake up the culture of silence and fighting alone. I'm doing it for the culture!

Join me back here every week for more of my story as I deal with my collards and change the culture.
